My Views on Free Will versus Determinism

I cannot say what Free Will would consist of, but it seems inconsistent with determinism. I think it could never be conclusively decided scientifically whether determinism is true or not. I think both indeterminism in logic and quantum physics show the possibility of indeterminism concerning both mind and matter. Both Karl Popper and Alfred North Whitehead argued that scientific reasoning would be impossible if determinism were true. Let us just consider a few consequences of determinism, if it were true. Whether a person would commit a crime would be determined in advance. So would whether or not they would be punished. And what you think about this is also determined. Whether punishment deters someone – or whether they believe they will get away with a crime is also determined. I am somewhat influenced by Roger Penrose, although I cannot follow all his reasoning.
